Finally, a few tips to those who are planning a Hawaii or Big Island trip in the next year or two. There is enough pent up demand that things will be crazy busy for all of this to work itself out and return to normal busy.

  • Rental car - book it first! Book a few of these and you can cancel the others. Helps with actually getting a vehicle at all and then, the size of the vehicle and then the price.

  • Then, book accommodation and then plane tickets. That is in the decreasing order of craziness of availability.

  • Big Island is big - much bigger than I remember in my previous two trips. One lane roads and at 45-55 mph and some traffic, it will take time to get around and so plan for it accordingly

  • Volcano has seized erupting - after 30 years? - so don't wait around for it to erupt to go. You can make another unscheduled trip if and when it erupts.

  • Big Island deserves at least 4+ days. Be aware that doing island hopping will cause hassles in airports, hotels, rentals etc.

  • Expect non-trivial waits at restaurants, tours and other places.

  • Stay a day or two at Hilo in the east. Not only it shows a slice of old (non commercial) Hawaii, it is very easy to access the Volcano park and multiple waterfalls and pristine beaches.

  • Try to do activities - hiking, water activities, tours - early in your trip. These likely require either waking up early or strenuous activity or both. It is easier to chill later in the trip than the other way around.

  • Sun is up early, quite bright and gets to 80s pretty early. So, doing things early will help - esp, if you are concerned about traffic on drives or waits for activities.

  • Great beaches and sunsets - the best and easily accessible ones are on the West side - more precisely north of Kona (above the airport). You could seriously get used to seeing sunsets every day!

  • Get a good travel book and read up - worth the time investment to help you plan better. We used Hawaii The Big Island Revealed: The Ultimate Guidebook
