North
Waipi'o Valley at the northern tip and Papakōlea Beach at the southern tip are both awesome places but have challenging hikes.
Waipi'o Valley is considered the most scenic spot on the Big Island - steep valleys ending in a blue ocean. Going down to the valley floor is 25% gradient (4x4, tours or hiking). We did the hard way - hiking - very challenging when climbing up (the 1+ mile hike up feels like 5 miles). But, at the bottom is an amazing Black Sand beach with awesome breeze. It is said that King Kamehameha, as a baby, was hidden away in this valley - to protect against enemies.
