Itinerary
Depending on the time you have, once can do many different flavors of itineraries. Tripadvisor, YouTube, Google Search, guide books etc give you many choices. We have done a 3 day and a 4 day version of Big Island previously - mostly focused on Volanoes and some beach and water activities. On our third trip, we planned 8 days in just the Big Island alone - allowed us to explore more thoroughly, soak in the culture, do things in Island time and truly feel like a local!
Day 01 [Hilo]: Fly in and drive across Saddle Road and relax in Hilo.
Day 02 [Hilo]: Akaka Falls, Rainbow Falls, Umauma Falls, Kaumana Caves
Day 03 [Hilo]: Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park (multiple hikes, Chain of Craters)
Day 04 [Hilo]: Pahoa, Issac Hale Black Sand Beach, Leilani Estates, Hilo Bay, July 4th Fireworks
Day 05 [Kona]: Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, Saddle Road, Place of Refuge
Day 06 [Kona]: Waipio Valley Hike, Waimea, Spencer Beach
Day 07 [Kona]: Puu'kohola Heiau, Pololū Valley Lookout, Hapuna Beach
Day 08 [Kona]: Green Sand Beach hike, ʻAnaehoʻomalu Beach
Day 09 [Kona]: Relax, spend time at Kahalu’u Beach Park, Fly back
Don't forget to enjoy your drives along the road, with awesome sceneries, enjoying local fares! While the drives take time, more so if you are in a hurry, the views of two large volcano mountains, deep blue (sometimes green) ocean and occasionally, clear views of Mau'i (Haleakalā mountain) and rain followed by rainbows - these make it all worth it!
